An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Obtain the Job That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a sizeable 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I shared that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an research lab at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I should apply for a role with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but right away informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a place where anything feels possible – she declared: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. A perk of the job was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or nerve to reach out at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia led me to a position in Switzerland where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
