A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
