Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
