The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
